The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and impressionable brains of the young ladies of the ballet, their mothers, the box-keepers, the cloak-room attendants or the concierge. Yes, he existed in flesh and blood, although he assumed the complete appearance of a real phantom; that is to say, of a spectral shade.

Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera

For nearly a century, the legend of the Opera Ghost has thrilled readers around the globe. But there’s much more to his story than the brief chapter of his life written by Gaston Leroux. In Phantom Variations, you will find thirteen tales that explore Erik’s childhood, his romance with Christine, and his life – before and after – becoming the Phantom of the Opera. These are tales of what might have been, and what never was. They are Phantom Variations: Tales from the World of the Opera Ghost.

Phantom Variations: An Anthology

The Write Stuff, an online forum built around the idea of writers and readers coming together to discuss and encourage the written word, is pleased to announce the publication of a new Phantom of the Opera anthology – Phantom Variations: Tales from the World of the Opera Ghost. It will include stories by some of your favorite authors on FanFiction.net, as well as some new authors. All proceeds will go to the Porphyria Foundation.

Phantom Variations: Tales from the World of the Opera Ghost offers readers an exciting assortment of romantic tales based on Leroux's tragic character -- Erik, the mysterious man who lives beneath the Paris Opera. Contributing authors will be familiar names to most readers of "phan phiction" but a few new talents are included in the collection. Stories vary from horror to fantasy to action and light comedy.

    CHARITABLE DONATIONS

We are also excited to announce that all proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the American Porphyria Foundation, with a goal of raising $1,000 for that organization.

The American Porphyria Foundation is an organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by Porphyria through enhancing public awareness, developing educational programs and distributing educational materials, and by supporting research.

Porphyria is not a single disease but a group of at least eight disorders that differ considerably from each other. A common feature in all porphyrias is the accumulation in the body of "porphyrins" or "porphyrin precursors." The symptoms arise mostly from effects on the nervous system or the skin. Effects on the nervous system occur in the acute porphyrias. Proper diagnosis is often delayed because the symptoms are nonspecific. Skin manifestations can include burning, blistering, and scarring of sun-exposed areas.

Desiree Lyon Howe, Executive Director of the APF says, her organization is excited about this book, and encourages others to learn and understand more about Porphyria. "Joining the APF provides you with the opportunity to play a major part of enhancing patient and physician education, improving diagnosis and treatment and supporting life saving research. To join, call the APF office at 1-866 - APF- 3635, email porphyrus@aol.com or join over the APF website. We need you!"
